The other day, the song title and lyrics to Bobby McFerrin's a cappella recording of "Don't Worry Be Happy" that captured the #1 spot on the pop music charts in 1988 suddenly popped into my head. In so doing, I began to contemplate how the song lyrics to dispense of needless worry relates to what many of us are feeling today.
In today's digital age, multitasking has become a common way of life. We exercise in the gym while listening to a podcast or music with the aid of ear buds and portable musical players. We prepare meals while watching a zoom presentation in the background. We carry our cell phones wherever we go. We create an internal dialog running through our heads with a continuous message of DO, DO, DO.
"I need to take my kids (or grandkids) to school and soccer practice. I need to make an appointment with the doctor. I've got to get the car fixed. I got to plan our next vacation. I have to attend this meeting. I got to write up and send out our year-end holiday letters. I need to do this. I got to do that."
Burdened by such thoughts and beliefs, it is no mystery why we often feel stressed and out of sorts.
There has to be a good reason why we are called human beings — not human doings. Would we derive as much inspiration from Bobby McFerrin's recording if he sang, "Don't Worry DO Happy"?
Observe the freedom and simplicity of our friends in the natural world: Sheep grazing, butterflies darting to-and-fro, and squirrels climbing trees. They do what comes naturally without struggle.
Lend an ear and a helping hand to those in need. Spend time being with your pets and exchange the love and affection that they freely give to you. Avoid the temptation to take on multiple tasks at the same time. Be at peace with your present environment and situation. Take time to play and be still. And just be yourself.
