A month after graduating from college, I agreed to accompany Rocky, a high school classmate and close friend, in taking a car trip to visit several well-known tourist attractions along the American Southwest and Great Plains. Our final stop before we planned to reverse course was a vacation cabin located on the shores of Lake Superior that was owned by Mr. Thomas, the father of a mutual friend of ours.
Rocky had landed a lucrative marketing job that he would assume in a couple of months, while I was unemployed. Rocky did most of the trip planning, deciding what places we would visit. To pay for food and incidental expenses, I brought $200 in cash that I had earned from the last job that I had held prior to graduation.
