Don't give up just because an inner voice says, "You've never done that before"
Go for it. You can do it!
Think back to your past accomplishments, however mundane they may be. For instance, you learned to walk when you were a very young child. Remember when you fell down repeatedly, only to rise up and try again until you succeeded.
Here are a few personal examples where I did not let the lack of a specific skillset or job experience get in my way:
• I have never taken acting lessons and cannot read music well. Even so, I appeared in a dozen community theater productions during the 1990s where I acted, sang, and danced on stage in front of appreciative audiences.
• My knowledge of the Japanese and Spanish languages is rudimentary at best. Even so, that restriction did not deter me from arranging and completing a solo tour of Japan (in 2002) and Mexico (in 2017).
• My educational background and professional experience are largely centered on business, financial services, and information technology. Since 2012, I have been selling and writing about a food supplement product called organic sulfur that I had to learn from scratch.
• There is a learning curve to growing herbs and vegetables successfully in a home garden. While I've had my share of failures, I've been pleasantly surprised by the crops that have done well.
Be teachable and ask for help. Don't be afraid of failing. If you don't get it quite right the first time, learn from your mistakes and try again. Be kind to yourself. Pat yourself on the back for making a concerted effort to succeed despite the obstacles. Give it your best shot and gently remind yourself that you are not a failure.
